In just a moment, I’m going to ask you to make a contribution to support my friend Peter Welch’s campaign to join me as Vermont’s other U.S. Senator. But first, let me tell you why he’s a progressive champion worth supporting.

Peter left college to organize against racist housing discrimination in Chicago, which set him on the path to a lifetime of political activism. When he graduated from law school, many of his classmates went to Wall Street or K Street. Instead, he moved to Bridge Street in rural Vermont and became one of the county’s first public defenders.

He served in the statehouse for over a decade and has been serving in Congress alongside me since 2006. In the House, he’s been fighting for a Green New Deal, Medicare for All and lower prescription drug costs.

Peter is exactly the kind of progressive champion we need in the Senate. So I am asking:

When I was elected Senator, Peter won the House seat that I had vacated. Working alongside Peter as part of Vermont’s congressional delegation in the years since, I’ve seen up close his dedication to the people of Vermont and progressive causes around the country.

With a 50-50 Senate, we have to win every seat this November to keep the majority. And we all know how much is at stake: reproductive freedom, Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, and more.
