October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) was first introduced in 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic violence. It was created not only to bring more awareness to others but to connect and unify the millions of affected domestic violence victim/survivors. Its hope is to break the chains of violence that currently have such a strong grip on our nation.
The Domestic Violence Action Fund (DVAF) is a multi-year campaign initiated by Peace Over Violence to make the connections between domestic violence and the most urgent health, social and economic problems impacting our communities today. Domestic violence is not merely a conflict between two people. It begins in our homes and extends into society at large, contributing to violence everywhere. We must acknowledge that domestic violence central to the struggle for social justice and is a root cause of so much trauma, suffering and social ills that persist from generation to generation.
DVAF seeks to inspire and activate all of us to imagine life without domestic violence.

POV Survivor Self Care Healing Day
On October 14th in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Peace Over Violence hosted a self-care event for 25 of our client survivors and their children. Volunteers shared their skills including providing facials, manicures, hair styling, set-up of a serenity room, make-up tutorials and a dance movement workshop! We received donations of clothes, make-up, and funds to create make-up kits for clients to shop and take home. We cannot express how meaningful this event was for our clients and our community, we look forward to doing more events like this to promote connection and awareness.
Special thank you to those who contributed to helping make this event happen and supporting the mission of POV and collective care for survivors.
