There’s a particular creativity, magic, and grit to college organizing. They’re willing and able to experiment with bold organizing tactics, have a better sense of what is most important to our 18-22 year old base, have a pulse (and influence) on how our culture is shifting, and bring in some of our youngest members who are ready to sustain this work for the long haul. 

In 2019, RG formally committed to organizing and supporting the youngest members in our base by establishing the Student Organizing Fellowship (SOF).

Our first SOF cohort was three rad student organizers: Rose, Shira, and Harshita. In the fellowship’s first year, the fellows successfully organized on more than 15 campuses, planned national student virtual praxis, developed a resource library for college students interested in wealth redistribution, facilitated trainings to help students organize their families into redistribution, and developed multiracial base-building resources and campus events. 

Our second cohort of skillful fellows—Emily, Eui Young, Brita, Olive, and Eva—continued developing and holding student-only training and support spaces across RG, redesigned our college organizing strategy, planned a spring drive storytelling event, and supported student leaders nationally in their redistribution and political ed journeys. 

We’re now a month into our third cohort, and we’ve grown to six fellows: Charlie, Harry, Leila, Sadie, Emily, and Grace. Like RG’s staff, this cohort of Fellows is multi-racial, cross-class (for the first time!), spread out around the U.S., and deeply skilled in organizing. I’m excited to introduce them to you!

Harry (he/him) is a community organizer from Grosse Pointe, a suburb directly to the east of Detroit, Michigan. He graduated this past May from the College of Wooster with a BA in Sociology and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. He started organizing at 15 years old and later co-founded Detroit Area Youth Uniting Michigan (DAYUM) to build youth power that can be used to improve the lives of young Michiganders. When Harry is not working, he loves trying new coffee shops and hiking with friends.

Leila Kashani-Sabet (she/her) is an actor, facilitator, dancer, and activist. She works at the intersection of theater and racism and creates work that prompts us to collectively imagine and enact new, liberated worlds. She relishes facilitating community-building processes and visioning sessions while centering care at every step of her work.

Sadie (she/her) is a senior at Oberlin College studying political science, education studies, and rhetoric and composition. She is a first-generation college student, an avid supporter of public schools, and a pursuer of educational justice. Sadie spends most of her time working with students in various contexts, including advising first-year students in the Bonner Scholars program, teaching creative writing in Juvenile Detention Facilities across Ohio, and tutoring writing through Oberlin's Podis Fellowship for Writing Pedagogy. Sadie is also passionate about music, trying new iced coffee recipes, and her mean-spirited orange cat, Momo.

Emily (they/them) is a current sophomore at Swarthmore College on Lenni-Lenape land. Before arriving at Swarthmore, they lived in New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Philadelphia. At Swarthmore, they are an Education and History special major on track to get a teacher certification in high school social studies. Emily has been involved in organizing since high school and found their way to RG through climate organizing work and found it to be a good fit to do meaningful work towards collective liberation as a white person with an upper managerial class background. 

We are so excited to have this fiery group of student fellows. We can’t wait to see what they, and all of our youngest members, have in store for the future of RG and this movement.

This Fall drive (Oct 17 - Nov 21) is here! In that time, members and staff will leverage the power of the ask – to renew membership (or to become a member), to resource our partners, and to sign the redistribution pledge as acts of collective power-building. Over 500 RGers have signed the pledge to move over $92 million to social movements this year! During the Drive, we want to get to $100 million pledged, and we want to raise the remainder of our organizational budget, which is 95% funded by membership contributions from about 1100 members who are asked to move 5% of their overall annual giving to RG. RG also asks that members move 10% of their overall giving to our campaign partners, the Movement for Black Lives and the Center for Popular Democracy. 

The Triangle NC Chapter is deep into its year of re-building. We’ve recently wrapped up our 2022 Praxis group, held our first Giving Dinner, are collectively exploring chapter policies around direct-asks and solicitations, base-building like champions, and almost every chapter member has created a redistribution plan. We’re feeling ready to emerge!

RG Boston is continuing our partnership with Cambridge HEART, a first-response alternative to the police that is re-imagining mental health response, domestic violence intervention, proactive community care and more. We'll be hosting a fundraiser for them in December contributing to their 150k match for individual donations!

BARG has been getting out the vote and raising awareness on local ballot measures for renter protections, affordable housing and fair taxation along with our organizing partners Community Ready Corps and Mujeres Unidas y Activas. And with our new organizing partner Sogorea Te' Land Trust, we met our goal of raising $400,000 by Indigenous People's Day to support their work!

Join RGers across New England* for an opportunity to build and deepen interpersonal and chapter-wide relationships, invest in peer learning, and plant seeds for collaboration. With a history of regional retreats (last in 2017) and one-off collaborations, we're excited to be coming together and building towards more ongoing connections in the region. We hope to continue building a regional identity and shared politics to inform our organizing, recognizing that there are long histories of systemic violence and social movements in our region. All are welcome to join - active chapter leaders, newer members, folks looking to reconnect with RG organizing, and RGers in non-chapter areas.

Since June of 2020, we've (a cross-class variety of Black RG members and a Black RG staff member) had a much needed and very refreshing Black Caucus gatherings.
