NOTES FROM THE FIELD | 2022 | No. 10

Across the vast sweeping plains of northern Asia, all the way down to
what is now Portugal and Spain, Przewalski's horses
[link removed]
once roamed. Considered the last true wild horses, they were declared
extinct in their native range by the 1980s. But today, cutting-edge
science and collaborative partnerships offer hope for the future of
these majestic and regal horses.
With your support, we're working with our global conservation partners
to reintroduce the Przewalski's horse into their native habitat. And
until recently, all surviving Przewalski's horses were the descendants
of just 12 individuals, so genetic diversity is key to sustainable and
successful long-term conservation. In August 2020, we celebrated the
birth of a foal named Kurt. The first-ever clone of a Przewalski's
horse, Kurt is the clone of a stallion whose DNA had been absent from
the living population-but which has been cryopreserved for over
40 years in our Wildlife Biodiversity Bank and Frozen Zoo®.
Today, Kurt is thriving at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park
[link removed]
, where he's been introduced to a filly named Holly. Our dream is that
one day, this pairing will help bring back lost genetic
diversity-and hope-to future generations of this
endangered horse.
You make our dreams a reality-and without you, these
groundbreaking conservation efforts aren't possible. Kurt's birth is a
monumental milestone-for Przewalski's horses and all species
that will benefit from these revolutionary conservation techniques.
Visit Kurt and Holly at the Safari Park, and discover how your support
is securing the future for Przewalski's horses and wildlife worldwide.

GENOMICS IN THE JUNGLE
Where do you send lab samples in the middle of a jungle?
Genomics-the study of genes and chromosomes-offers crucial
insights into wildlife populations, monitors their health, and is
invaluable for saving endangered species. But the high-tech labs
needed for this specialized work aren't easy to set up and maintain in
extremely remote regions. Through your support, we're investing in
innovative, low-cost, emerging molecular technologies and operating a
full laboratory run by the local community, right in the heart of the
Peruvian Amazon. You're making innovative technology accessible to
scientists and local communities around the world.

THE APP THAT SAVES APES
You can help save orangutans while you shop. Across the Southeast
Asian islands of Borneo and Sumatra, orangutan habitats are
increasingly impacted by unsustainable palm oil plantations. These
gentle red apes are now critically endangered, and some of the
solutions to help save them are in the palm of your hand. Download
PalmOil Scan, an app that helps you confirm your purchases contain
sustainable palm oil from sources that don't threaten wildlife and
their habitats.

With each scan, you're helping to protect these great apes and the
fragile rainforests they call home.

FINDING NEW STRATEGIES
With you by our side, we're protecting species like sun bears and
tigers that are threatened by the illegal wildlife trade. Conservation
begins with people, and our social scientists are working to resolve
this problem where it begins-consumer demand. Discover how
through your support, and our Asian Rainforest Conservation Hub, we're
changing consumer behavior and protecting wildlife from illegal
trafficking.

CONNECTING FOR CONSERVATION
As we collaborate with partners to save and protect native wildlife
across our Southwest Conservation Hub, including the critically
endangered California condor and Peninsular pronghorn, we also look to
the first stewards of the land and wildlife, the Kumeyaay people, and
our local Indigenous community. Earlier this month, the San Pasqual
Band of Mission Indians hosted the second annual Indigenous Peoples'
Celebration at the Safari Park, where together we celebrated our local
Indigenous community, their commitment to wildlife, and their culture.
These partners have also named California condor chicks born at the
Safari Park, continuing to honor the history we share together, and
inspiring people to reconnect with the wildlife around us. All
successful conservation starts locally, and your support makes
collaborative community partnerships in our own backyard possible.
