John,
Last week, the leaders of over 80 companies, chambers of commerce, and education associations came together and sent a letter to Congress warning of an oncoming “crisis” if DACA protections for immigrant youth are not extended.
The Fifth Circuit Court ruling that sent the case surrounding DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival) back to the U.S. District Court in the Southern District of Texas—the same lower court judge who previously ruled DACA unlawful—puts millions of DACA recipients at risk of losing their work authorization and protection from deportation, while putting companies at risk of losing critical employees.
Click here to send a letter to your members of Congress urging them to protect undocumented youth from deportation.
If the DACA program were to end, the U.S. will lose more than 500,000 jobs—34,000 are health care workers providing patient care, and another 11,000 individuals are working in health care settings keeping these facilities functioning.1 The U.S. economy will lose as much as $11.7 billion annually—or roughly $1 billion monthly—in wages from previously employed DACA recipients.
By not passing a permanent legislative solution, Congress has kept millions of Dreamers, families, and communities in a state of limbo. More than 1.3 million people live with a DACA recipient, including 300,000 U.S.-born children who have at least one parent with DACA.2
Congressional inaction has led to confusion and chaos for undocumented communities and mixed status families. Congress must reckon with the injustices toward immigrant communities and pass permanent legal protections for undocumented youth NOW!
We know that DACA is right and legal. Now it’s time for Congress to make those protections permanent.
Thank you for all you do,
Deborah Weinstein Executive Director, Coalition on Human Needs
