Hey John,
Yesterday, we told you about Uber’s new ad program that’s selling your real-time location directly to advertisers.1 Now, our petition to stop this slimy data abuse is live. Demand Uber stop selling your location data.
In the wide world of corporate data abuses, Uber’s plan for selling “journey ads” is in a class of its own. From when you call an Uber to when you finish the ride, Uber knows exactly where you are—and its logs know where you’ve been on past rides. Selling this data to advertisers gives ad agencies the full rundown of your travel travel, including trips you might want to keep private like to the doctor, to a protest, or to an abortion clinic.
Two reasons this stinks: This data handoff is a huge target for hackers—and advertisers care about selling us stuff, not our safety.
Stop Uber's Ad Plan
Uber has a long history of total negligence towards people’s privacy. Remember when it used its “God View” to track journalists and celebrities?2 We think they’re sensitive to this criticism, so we’re pushing them to publicly renounce their surveillance advertising plan. Add your name here and help make it happen.
Decisions made about the digital world impact our human rights. Uber’s plan is a direct example of this, because real-time location advertising threatens your right to privacy, to protest, and to access healthcare. That's why we must stop it.
Thanks for everything you do,
Caitlin at ❤️ Fight
