Please join us for our 2nd Annual Ward 8 Trunk & Treat in partnership with Bullying is not Dope this Saturday, October 29th, from 4 pm - 7 pm. The event will be held at Oxon Run Park on the Wheeler Road SE & Valley Avenue SE side near the basketball courts. This is a free, family-friendly event.

There will be many fun activities for children, such as a game truck, bounce house, hayrides, face painting, food, drinks, concession snacks, and live performances.

We strongly encourage children and their families to get into the Halloween spirit and wear costumes. Get creative with your costume and put something together from items in your home that you already have.

Greetings DC Water Community Stakeholders:

As the project in your area moves forward, we want to inform you that the Contractor will be working at 700 Southern Avenue SE this evening beginning at 8:00pm. Specifically, they will be relocating an existing 8-inch water main, installing new 8-inch water main, all while performing a number of other construction activities at this location. This portion of work should take approximately 8 hours to complete, and there will be scheduled water service outage to customers at the following addresses during the work:

• 860 Southern Avenue SE
• 820 Southern Avenue SE
• 800 Southern Avenue SE
• 814 Southern Avenue SE
• 700 Southern Avenue SE (Johenning Baptist Church)

All affected customers listed above have been given the standard 48-hour notification prior to this portion of work and scheduled water service outage.

WASHINGTON - Ward 8 Councilmember Trayon White and community activists criticized members of the D.C. Police Department Friday for using what White described as "unacceptable" and "excessive use of force" during an arrest this week. 

The altercation between several officers and a group of men was captured on a cellphone camera Thursday night in Southeast D.C. 

In the video, which has since gone viral on social media, an officer can be seen pushing a man against a short fence. The man’s back bends backward before he's hurled to the ground. Community members can be heard shouting at the officers, accusing them of breaking the man’s back. 

As another man grapples with police, a voice can be heard wailing in the background. It’s not clear who was screaming. Police told FOX 5 that the two men involved, and the officers sustained injuries.

A new bill in the D.C. Council would open up the city to multiple mobile sports betting apps, effectively undoing the virtual monopoly currently held by the D.C. Lottery and its widely criticized GambetDC app.

The measure, authored by Councilmember Elissa Silverman (I-At Large), would also terminate the city’s current sole-source contract with Intralot — the Greek gaming giant that operates the city’s lottery and developed the Gambet app — when it’s up for renewal in 2024, and require that any future lottery and sports betting contract be competitively bid.

Silverman’s bill addresses some of the simmering frustrations with GambetDC and the controversial sole-source contract that the D.C. Council granted Intralot in 2019 to develop the sports betting app for the D.C. Lottery.
