** Massive Oil Spill in Salina Cruz Devastates Punta Conejo and Surrounding Coastlines
------------------------------------------------------------
On Sunday, October 23, the presence of oil and hydrocarbons were discovered on different beaches near the Port of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca.
The oil spill has reached Playa Brasil, Playa Azul, and Playa Guelaguichi, affecting the region's fauna, tourism, and fishing activities.
“We have confirmed reports that the crude has reached Playa La Bamba, 25 Km SW away from the spill source. Birds covered in oil were found in Bahías de Huatulco and Morro Ayuta, 105 Km and 68 Km away from the source of the spill. The exact volume of oil spilled and the impacted area remains unknown.”

** Our Ongoing Campaign to Protect Punta Conejo
------------------------------------------------------------
In 2019, Save The Waves launched the #SalvemosPuntaConejo campaign () with our local partners to protect the iconic point break from a port project.
Save The Waves has been working diligently with our friends on the ground to advocate for the conservation of this pristine coastline and the magical point break at the center of it all.
The news of the oil spill is devastating. Such catastrophes highlight the importance of protecting this surf ecosystem and how large-scale industrial projects could negatively impact the region.
“Punta Conejo is surrounded by beautiful but also vulnerable coastal ecosystems. This area is not only the home to many species, including the leatherback and olive ridley sea turtles, it is also home to many people whose livelihoods depend on the coastal resources. A conservation project in Punta Conejo will prevent further threats to the wave, biodiversity, habitat and the local livelihoods and will contribute to conserving this unique and important ecosystem.”
- Mara Arroyo, STW Surf Protected Area Network Manager
