Growing up, smart, strong, and unconventional women were discouraged. When I ran for office, the South Carolina legislature was dominated by a Good Old Boys' Club and my opponent thought women shouldn’t be in politics. People thought I was too brown, too female, too young, too conservative, too principled. I said: Too bad.
I was inspired by great women who broke barriers and defied expectations, women like Margaret Thatcher and Jeane Kirkpatrick.
