John, it's no secret that I love the USPS.
I've fought hard to make sure that our Postal Service gets the funding that it needs to thrive. It might not be an issue that makes front page news, but our mail system is an absolutely essential and foundational component of our country.
The USPS connects us when we are far apart from the people we love; it delivers us the prescription medication we depend on; and when election officials count up the votes in just 12 days, millions of voters will have cast their ballots through the mail.
These voters are counting on timely, reliable service from the USPS to make their voices heard in one of the most consequential elections of our lifetime – but right now, the USPS is simply not functioning at its best.
You see, during the height of the pandemic – a time when families were counting on the USPS more than ever before – Postmaster General Louis DeJoy intentionally slowed mail delivery. And before the 2020 election, he ordered the removal of HUNDREDS of high-speed mail sorting machines. These decisions are wrong for our USPS and wrong for our democracy – and families and voters are facing the consequences.
Now, ahead of the midterm elections, with the future of Senate control on the line, he's announced plans to cut 50,000 jobs at the USPS!
This announcement couldn't come at a worse time. The elections are less than two weeks away, and millions of voters are already sending in their ballots by mail! I need to show my colleagues in the Senate that Americans won't stand for this. So please, will you respond to my live poll before 11:59 p.m. tonight to make your voice heard for the USPS?
Do you trust Postmaster General Louis DeJoy with our USPS?
Thanks for standing with me on this one.
The fight continues,
Tom
