Our new, original data shows that rule of law has declined globally for the fifth year in a row. But there are bright spots, too, and declines are less widespread than at the height of the COVID-19 crisis.   

Still, pre-pandemic authoritarian trends continue to erode the rule of law, according to the World Justice Project (WJP) Rule of Law Index 2022. More than 4.4 billion people live in countries where adherence to the rule of law is falling.
