an existing EPA loophole gives certain new chemicals a pass from a rigorous review
John,
A coalition of environmental and community health advocates is petitioning the Environmental Protection Agency to close loopholes allowing hundreds of ‘forever chemicals’ into American markets.
Despite evidence these per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) pose serious health risks, an existing EPA loophole gives certain new chemicals a pass from a rigorous review if the manufacturer states the PFAS will not be used in high volumes.
This is despite recent reports finding that PFAS now pollute 83% of U.S. waterways. This is terrifying because scientists have also determined that they can cause cancer, immune system damage, and cardiovascular and developmental diseases.
Despite the EPA warning in June that even water with low amounts of PFAS poses risks to human health, this EPA loophole remains.
With PFAS slipping through the bureaucratic cracks, the health of millions of Americans is compromised.
