Volunteer spotlight

Our team of more than 25,000 volunteers across the country makes the work we do at NextGen possible. Hear from one of these incredible volunteers, Sara Y., on why she’s involved with NextGen:

- Sara Y., she/her
- "I am deeply passionate about social justice, climate action, and voting rights and I believe that NextGen America is doing incredible work in advocating for these causes. During the 2020 Election Cycle, I wanted to do everything I could to get out the vote and achieve a brighter future for America. My mom introduced me to NextGen and I was immediately drawn to its positive and helpful messaging. It has been so lovely to see NextGen expand and grow its organizing efforts. This organization truly has the best people, resources, and action items -- I am so proud to be a volunteer leader with such a wonderful group."

What’s at stake?

There’s so much at stake this election season, it can feel hard to keep track. We’re here to help -- these are some key issues that are on the ballot this year:

- Abortion rights: With Roe v. Wade overturned, many Republican-led states have already banned abortion, and more are poised to follow. And Republican leaders have made it clear that they won’t stop there. Republican Senate leadership recently announced at a press conference that if they take control of Congress, they plan to pass a nationwide law that criminalizes abortion -- even in the case of rape and incest. We know what our country looks like without legal access to abortion, and we will not go back. We’ve all got to show up this November to vote against these extremists and vote for candidates that will protect and expand our rights.

- Economic growth: We know that the economy isn’t working for younger Americans. But just in these past two years, we’ve seen incredible progress for our economy led by Democrats in office -- take the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act for example. The IRA sets our generation up for success and puts our country’s focus back on working Americans, rather than corporations and the ultrawealthy. But MAGA Republicans that are running for office want to reverse this progress and protect the status quo that ignores our need for change. We can stop them -- when we come together and vote, we can keep these Republicans out of office, and continue the economic growth we’ve seen.

You’re all caught up. Take action on these issues now: [link removed]

Why we’re voting

You know what’s scary? Not voting. Here’s why our staff is voting this November:

- Patie Morton, she/her - Distributed Organizing Associate: “I am voting in the 2022 elections because it's vital to keep Republicans out of office as much as possible, and more than ever, we need young people to vote because young people today have a much broader worldview than ever before and most of the younger folks I know are incredibly attuned to the needs of those who are less fortunate, not to mention the unfairness of so many things in our country today.”

- Gary Perkins, he/him - Operations Associate: "I am voting in the 2022 election to stand up to anti-democratic forces in the Republican Party. It is important for young people to vote in this election because they are the most diverse voting group and account for half of the voting population making them a powerful political force."

- Malia Nellums, she/her - Program Associate: "I am a queer Black woman that lives in a blue city in a very red state that has been gerrymandered out of proportion in order to keep the proponents of my oppression in power. I've worked in a local school system and have seen the potential of students squandered by the downfalls of retroactive policies that hold back a new generation from getting the education, physically safe environments, and financial and emotional support that they rightfully deserve. I'm encouraging other young people to vote because there is far too much on the line when it comes to our rights to our bodies, who we love, affording survival, and existing overall, especially in increasingly marginalized communities!"

Who we are

NextGen America’s mission is to empower young voters to engage in the political process and ensure our government is responsive to the largest and most diverse generation in American history.
