Dear John,

What are your resolutions heading into the new year? For most of us, setting goals and working toward them leads to self-improvement. The same concept applies to improving the criminal justice system. When we acknowledge what’s not working and take steps to right those wrongs, we build a more effective and equal justice system. When we prioritize public safety, the result is stronger, more vibrant communities, and police who are able to work more efficiently to protect the public.

Throughout the month of December, we're proud to share 12 Ways of Criminal Justice Reform – real examples of our speakers making a difference in the world.

Your partnership made these changes happen. Donate now to stand with LEAP as we fight for justice reform in 2020 and beyond.

The Eleventh Way of Reform: LEAP Fights for Public Safety Measures That Benefit Our Communities

Executive Director Major Neill Franklin (Ret.) testified on behalf of LEAP in support of the Secure and Fair Enforcement (SAFE) Banking Act, calling on Congress to prioritize public safety by allowing legitimate marijuana businesses access to the banking system. Forcing businesses to operate on a cash-only basis puts employees and patrons at risk of targeting for theft.  Medical marijuana patients and responsible adult consumers shouldn’t have to worry about their personal safety when visiting a legal business. The House of Representatives heard LEAP’s call and made the responsible choice: they voted in the interest of public safety and passed the SAFE Banking Act, which will now go to the Senate. When LEAP’s law enforcement experts have a seat at the table, we’re able to move solutions forward.
