Friend —
You may have received a mailer this weekend from an outside PAC – the “Concerned Taxpayers of Washington State” – attacking me. This piece claimed that I am a liar, bought by special interests, and not-so-subtly implied that my identity as a member of the LGBTQ community means that I can’t be trusted.
This is gross and unacceptable.
It’s hypocritical for a PAC funded by corporations and big business saying that I’m the one bought by special interests. And despite their name, they don’t seem too concerned about the real issues impacting our neighbors here in the 26th District. I’m focused on ensuring working families have the tools they need to stay afloat, expanding access to affordable healthcare, and improving our education system. But these guys? They resort to attacking me based on my identity — using it as a wedge to distract voters from real issues.
At a time when the LGBTQ community across the country is facing attacks on our identity, threats to our bodily autonomy, and increasing rates of anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation — there is no place for these tactics to only further marginalize and stigmatize our community.
I’m proud of who I am. It’s an honor and privilege to be the first openly queer state Senator in our state’s history. And although this means I have to deal with attacks like this, I choose to instead focus on the opportunity I have to pave the way for the next generation. I’m committed to keeping our LGBTQ community safe, to sending a message to the younger generation that they do not have to hide who they are, that we all have so much to contribute to our communities.
This campaign should be about the issues. As elected officials, we have a responsibility to listen and respond to the needs of our neighbors, and from the beginning my focus in this campaign has been on the issues most important to you. We’re focused on positive messaging about my voting record and how I want to make people’s lives better.
All of this is made easier by having this team by my side, and I can’t thank you enough for standing with me. It makes all the difference, and it’s why we’re going to win this race — together.
