Dear friends,

Dr. Paul Farmer was not a lone hero who stood up for the oppressed and waged a superhuman campaign for medical justice. He was a leader, a visionary, and a deeply caring man, but he didn’t act alone. Paul insisted on partnership.

The truth is, Paul often said that he could not achieve all he envisioned if he attempted to do it by himself. Instead, he built an ever-expanding team of rebel caregivers around the world.

Today, that movement is a central part of Paul’s legacy. Together we provide care to impoverished people on four continents, and we’ve won global policy changes that have already saved millions of lives around the world.

But it’s up to us to continue Paul’s legacy. PIH is a promise to do more, and more must be done. Five million children will die this year before their 5th birthday, and 90% of them will be killed by treatable illnesses, which is to say they won’t be killed by illnesses at all. They’ll die because they don’t have access to the health care that is their human right and is readily available to their wealthier peers. In short, they’ll die of poverty—a condition created by human systems.

In honor of Paul, for what would have been his 63rd birthday, we’re taking action together to advance a game-changing global health bill in Congress and to raise immediate funding for lifesaving health care.

Please consider taking action as part of the team honoring Paul: [link removed]

Our only chance of fulfilling our promise is by working together across specialties, across oceans, across continents, and borders. This is how we become superhuman—not by standing taller than others, but by joining together in collective action.

In solidarity,

Partners In Health
