Dear John, As 2019 draws to a close, you’re probably thinking about what the new year holds — and so are we. At ASAN, we’ve been getting ready for 2020 since 2019 began, because the policy decisions that are made in the coming year will impact all our rights for years to come. We’ll be facing many battles, all with high stakes, as we fight to defend community living and the ADA, end restraint and seclusion, protect our immigrant community members from unjust policies, and make sure that all people with disabilities have the tools we need to participate in our democracy. ASAN will work on the Hill, on new resources, and online to fight these battles every day — and we need your help.
In recent years, we’ve seen what can happen when we take action as a community. Disabled people continue to claim our political power on a national stage, and policymakers are taking notice. The 2018 election had the largest disability turnout in recent memory. People with disabilities, and the issues that matter to us, are more visible on the campaign trail than ever before. As the disability community has become more politically engaged, ASAN has worked hard to make more and more policy issues accessible to ALL of our community members. In policymaking, in persistent advocacy, and in our polling places, there must be nothing about us, without us. Take action with us by supporting our work, and let’s make it happen together.
