We made incredible progress in 2019 and have big goals for 2020.
Dear John, With the support of advocates like you, our U.S. campaigns have made incredible progress in 2019. We face a huge new challenge because of the youth e-cigarette epidemic, but we’re doing everything we can to stop this threat and continue our march to create the first tobacco-free generation. Here are just a few 2019 victories that your contributions made possible: - We launched a major new initiative, Protect Kids: Fight Flavored E-Cigarettes, to reverse the youth e-cigarette epidemic.
- We took our fight to ban flavored e-cigarettes to the White House and urged President Trump to implement his plan to clear the market of these products.
| |
- 250 U.S. communities have now restricted flavored tobacco products, including:
- Massachusetts became the first state to end the sale of all flavored tobacco.
- New York City became the largest jurisdiction to prohibit flavored e-cigs.
- Sacramento and Los Angeles County also banned all flavored tobacco.
- We took the fight to Juul and defeated their ballot initiative to overturn San Francisco’s laws protecting kids from e-cigs. 80% of voters rejected it!
- We won major legal victories forcing the FDA to move up the deadline for reviewing e-cigs and to require graphic health warnings on cigarette packs.
- Atlanta is going smoke-free! We were a proud partner in the coalition that helped pass a new law that will soon end smoking in all Atlanta workplaces, including the world’s busiest international airport.
- We're breaking the link between tobacco and baseball. The Arizona Diamondbacks joined the list of teams with tobacco-free stadiums. We've now gotten more than half of MLB cities to knock tobacco out of the park!
- We got social media companies to crack down on tobacco marketing. Facebook and Instagram adopted strong policies against tobacco and e-cig marketing, including through paid "influencers" on their platforms.
There's so much more, but I'm told we should keep these emails relatively short. (How am I doing? Ha.)
And with your help, our list of accomplishments will be even longer next year – and it'll be even harder to narrow down the highlights!
Thank you so much for your continued support. Sincerely,
