Dear John,

Finally, some answers about the criminal conflict-of-interest charge involving a former Chief Deputy Assessor. A Voice of San Diego investigation ([link removed]) details what happened, most notably that that an anonymous tip led to the county investigation. The former top deputy has plead guilty and is waiting to be sentenced.

Several months ago, we had asked important questions:
1) Was there a competitive, transparent and properly vetted process for these contracts?

2) How did this alleged theft of our tax dollars go undetected, and where were the “checks and balances” we expect from any well-run public agency?

3) What is the San Diego County ARCC office doing now, to uncover the extent of the alleged corruption, make sure any wrong doers are held responsible and put the right system in place to make sure it NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN?

Not surprisingly, we received no answers. My opponent was the office spokesman for the Voice of San Diego story, and his conclusion was that the system worked, and this was a one-off situation.

Give me a break. Management by whistleblower is not an effective way to lead an organization.
