Dear friend,

Why do women have to choose between parenthood or financial security?

These are the two choices offered to many working women in Canada.

That's why LEAF intervened at the Supreme Court in the case Fraser et al v Canada (Attorney General) ([link removed]) .

Why is this case important for women across Canada?

Three former RCMP officers chose to participate in a job sharing arrangement so they could work reduced hours while raising a family. These women were denied the right to buy back their pension, unlike those RCMP officers who chose to go on a leave without pay.

We intervene in cases like these to ensure that the courts consider the broader social disadvantage and discrimination women face. That includes pension equality for women.
Pensions are relied on to survive in retirement and live with dignity.The overall poverty of senior women is a culmination of the inequities that exist throughout their lives, including the gendered wage gap.

That's why LEAF is in court fighting for pension equality, to ensure that working women are given equal access to pension benefits.
