John,
We are two weeks away from an Election Day that could decide what North Carolina's future looks like... Whether we have a thriving democracy or limited access to the ballot. Whether we step up to face our climate challenges or continue to hide our head in the sand. Whether we set equitable policy solutions that protect our communities, or continue to put polluters over people. There's a lot on the line, and we need your help today to make sure we elect leaders who will make the right choices for all of us.
Thank you!
Dan Crawford, Director of Governmental Relations
NC League of Conservation Voters
Dear John,
“Without a healthy democracy, we can’t have a healthy environment.”
Every voter deserves the equal freedom to elect leaders who reflect their values and who will protect their rights to clean air, clean water, and clean energy. NCLCV has aggressively entered the fight to protect our democracy, and we have already had some big wins.
For the last decade, the NC legislature’s GOP majority artificially entrenched themselves in power against the people’s will by drawing some of the most egregiously skewed maps in the country.
They used their ill-gotten power to slash the Department of Environmental Quality’s budget, hampering their ability to protect us from toxic forever chemicals, coal ash, and hog waste. Legislators have stuck their heads in the sand on climate change as our state gets hit by record heat, historic flooding and devastating storms.
Last year, these politicians tried to gerrymander again, passing a congressional map that would elect 11 Republicans to 3 Democrats in a 50-50 state, and state House and Senate maps that could bring them back into a supermajority.
But that won’t happen — because we took them to court. And we won! The state Supreme Court overturned the legislature’s gerrymandered congressional and legislative maps in the landmark North Carolina League of Conservation Voters v Hall decision.
Now with fairer court-ordered maps, we have the best chance in over a decade to build toward a pro-environment, pro-democracy majority. Will you power our 2022 fight with a meaningful gift, John? You’ve generously supported us or taken action with us in the past, and we need your support now more than ever.

For over 50 years, we have worked to create a political environment that protects our natural environment and our people. Our Conservation Votes PAC is one of the biggest players in the North Carolina progressive electoral space. We were critical to electing Roy Cooper governor in 2016, re-electing him in 2020, and breaking the Republican legislative supermajority in 2018.
This year, we’re working to grow the ranks of our legislative Green Caucus and to protect the state Supreme Court majority, which upheld our state Constitution and ended partisan gerrymandering. There are two state Supreme Court seats on the ballot in November, and losing even one would flip the 4-3 Democratic majority back to GOP control until at least 2028.
In a tough political environment like 2022, the risks of losing ground are real. Imagine what the pro-polluter, anti-voter leadership will do if they get their legislative supermajorities and Supreme Court majority back!
We are investing significant resources to protect Gov. Cooper’s veto and the court majority. And we are in the midst of that work now. This year, we have registered over 23,000 new voters!
Also, for the first time ever, North Carolina voters who want to elect public officials based on their support for the climate will have a comprehensive online guide created by the two leading environmental groups in the state. Our Conservation Votes PAC and the North Carolina Chapter of the Sierra Club have partnered to create a Green Voter Guide >> [link removed]. The guide, which was launched this week at greenvoterguidenc.org, combines the endorsements of both organizations – both joint endorsements as well as candidates endorsed by each organization individually. These are the candidates we are fighting to elect.
We use our Legislative Scorecard to help inform our endorsements. And this year for the first time, our scorecard tracks the votes that attempted to strengthen or weaken North Carolina’s democracy. You can see where your legislators stand on protecting our environment and our democracy. >> [link removed]
Polluters are already spending millions to stop us and our allies. We need to fight back with grassroots support like yours every step of the way. That means we need to make our final spending decisions soon since early voting begins October 20.
That’s why we’re asking for your critical ongoing support. Please make a generous gift today!
