A leader's words matter

Dear Friend,

A Prime Minister's words matter. Just seven short weeks ago I asked for your help to prevent the spread of harmful misinformation under a new government.

No one could have predicted how short Liz Truss’s time as Prime Minister would be, but despite this there was a huge amount of work to do. Full Fact challenged misleading claims made by Truss and her ministers and requested she and the chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng correct the record.

Now, yet again, there is a change at the top of government. In times of political turmoil, when things move so quickly, knowing what to believe and what information might be false can be challenging. When that information comes from people in the most powerful positions, and is amplified by the media, the harm caused can be extreme. It hurts democracy, it promotes hate, and it damages people’s health.

In his first public address as Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak said: “Trust is earned, and I will earn yours”. Set up a regular gift today ([link removed]) to help ensure he lives up to this obligation.

Tomorrow afternoon, your new Prime Minister will face his first Prime Minister’s Questions in Parliament. Our team of experts will be watching, and are ready to fact check what he (and the opposition) says. Rishi Sunak put integrity at the heart of his original leadership campaign, in August telling the BBC “I want to restore trust back into politics. I want to put integrity and honesty at the heart of how I run government and how I want to be prime minister”.

Together let’s make sure he lives up to these words. Full Fact will be here, holding your new Prime Minister to account while he’s in office, for however long that is.
