Charter discussions began in October of 2020. Several special meetings were held to review the charter and ordinances. Proposed charter amendments were discussed by the city council and school committee, then submitted to the city attorney for legal review. Public hearings were held and council voted to submit the proposed amendments to the voters. No substantial changes were submitted for approval, so no charter commission was required. The only changes being considered pertain to the school department. These relate to the changing of the name from "department of education" to "school department," and eliminating language regarding hiring/termination of the school superintendent. This is to be in compliance with state statute, which the charter states supersedes our charter if there is a conflict. Winter months in Maine can be challenging, to say the least; and slippery driveways, walkways and stairs can prove particularly hazardous for older adults. For the ninth year in a row, Auburn Public Works is deeply proud to offer their Sand Buckets for Seniors program. APW employees provide (and deliver) a free bucket full of sand for senior citizens living in Auburn. Recipients use this sand on their walkways, steps, and driveways to make them safer during the snowy/icy winter months. Nearly 300 Auburn residents enroll in the program each winter. Auburn homeowners who are 65 and older and wish to receive a free bucket of sand to use on their steps and walkways should contact Auburn Public Works (207-333-6670) to enroll by November 30. Bucket delivery will begin in early November. Seniors who are already part of this program will be contacted by PW staff in the weeks to come. Connect with the City of Auburn on our website!
