Friends, It takes great courage to step forward to lead as a Black man in America. Going beyond community and being willing to lead on a national level, speaking for people that may not have a voice. I have had the opportunity to get to know a young man named Joshua Harris-Till and learned of his campaign for US Congress in Oklahoma. He shared his story and how he has come to this point in being willing to serve the communities of Congressional District 5 in Oklahoma. Joshua is a young, Black man taking up the mantle of leadership. Pushing for what some would consider revolutionary changes, but what we know to be the common sense progressive solutions that will better our country. Joshua grew up learning the importance of advocacy because his family shared with him the story of his cousin, Emmett Till. At a young age, he had to learn to understand that Justice and Liberation aren’t free, but that it takes the commitment of advocacy. This has been the catalyst to his advocacy for the least, the lost and the left out. Joshua spent years building relationships with young and eager minds that shared the same goal of creating a better future for themselves and their communities. His passion for making sure young people have a voice led him to run for President of Young Democrats of Oklahoma, becoming the first Black person to lead the organization. After traveling the country on behalf of Young Democrats of Oklahoma, Joshua ran for President of Young Democrats of America and won, making him the first Black man to hold the position. Yet again, defying the odds of his ancestors and made history. Joshua will make history again in November with his election, making him the youngest person ever elected to federal office in state history! It is far past time that we stop calling young people the future, and start realizing they are the leaders we need right now.
