Eric Holder (via Twitter): "Democracy is on the ballot this year. Everywhere. Up and down ballot. Election deniers, extremists, authoritarian supporters want power to impose their view of America on us. Don't be fooled-this is all about their quest for power-and how they'll use it. Get off your ass and vote"

John,

I hope you’ll forgive me for my language in that tweet. I can get pretty passionate when it comes to saving our democracy.

I’m emailing you two weeks from what could be the most important election in the history of our country. The fact is, our democracy is in danger. And we can talk about what’s going on in various states and various polls and predictions, but what it really comes down to is this: We either protect our democracy this year, or we don’t.

I’m asking you to commit to vote. Commit to getting your family and friends to vote. Commit to encouraging your community to vote. Do everything you can. Because that’s the best tool we have in a democracy in order to protect it.

Growing up, the successes of the Civil Rights movement inspired me and motivated my entry into public service. That generation achieved victories that many didn’t think were possible. They did that because they believed in the ideals of this country and realized the promise of democracy for more and more Americans.

Fifty years from now, will people look back and think, that was the generation that failed to protect democracy?

No, John. That can’t happen – it can’t be allowed to happen. I’ll fight, and I know you will, too. And if we put enough of ourselves into the fight, we CAN win.

The first and most important step is to vote and to encourage our communities to vote. Go to iwillvote.com, find the information you need, and make a plan: when, where, and how you’ll vote. Then share the information with the people around you and ask them to do the same.

We can win this fight, John, I know we can.

Thank you for everything you do,
Eric H. Holder, Jr.
