Dear Planet Lovers,
Thank you for your generosity and dedication to our mission in 2019. We are lucky to have you in the 5 Gyres family and this last decade of success is all thanks to you.
As a surfer, I’ve known for a long time that plastic pollution in the ocean is a huge issue. I’ve even been hit in the face by a plastic bottle while out in the lineup! My love of the ocean is one of the reasons why 5 Gyres’ mission resonates so deeply with me. Another reason is that my first child is due next month! While I am beyond excited to be a father, I can’t help but be concerned about the planet he will be inheriting.
Will you help us turn this ship around and provide a safe, healthy, and beautiful planet for children all across the globe?

Because of you, we have a lot to be thankful for this year. Our points of pride for 2019 include:
- Completing the San Francisco Bay Microplastics Project, analyzing the data, and developing science-informed solutions to stop the flow of plastic into the San Francisco Bay
- Launching our first ever TrashBlitz in Los Angeles
- Growing our global Ambassador network to over 1,400 activists in over 66 countries
As we look to the future, I see science and solutions moving further upstream and closer to the source of the problem. We’re not going to clean up or recycle our way out of this global health crisis.
As 2019 comes to a close, this is your LAST CHANCE to make a tax-deductible donation with Stasher’s $10,000 match. Additionally, for every donation of $250 or above, we will send you your very own Stasher bag!
From all of us at The 5 Gyres Institute, we hope you had a happy holiday season and enjoy a plastic-free new year. I look forward to connecting with you in 2020 and I know solutions happen when we care about the planet, together.
For the next generation,
Air Copeland, Executive Director
