By returning to the progressive tax system our nation had decades ago, we can even the playing field, and raise hundreds of billions in the process. But we have to get Congress to act

 John,

At DFA, we work to elect candidates that understand government should be run by the people, not by the rich and powerful.

Over the years, we’ve helped elect fighters like Katie Porter, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, Elizabeth Warren, and Ro Khanna people that will always work hard to create a progressive tax system that benefits all of us, not just those at the top.

We can’t just sit back as the richest people in our nation accumulate unimaginable wealth and use it to dictate legislative outcomes. If the rich truly paid their fair share, we would create an economy that helps everyone get ahead, and that’s how it was decades ago.

In fact, in 1960, America had 26 income tax brackets and inequality was near its lowest level. Right now though, we have only seven tax brackets creating a situation in which a household in the top 1% has a total tax rate essentially equal to a household in the bottom 50%.

That’s why we must push Congress to create new tax brackets that create a real progressive tax system, making wealthy individuals pay their fair share.

Tell Congress: Add new tax brackets, so people who make more than $1 million, $5 million all the way up to more than $100 million a year, pay progressively higher tax rates than everyone else.

With income and wealth continuing to become more concentrated at the top, it’s critical for us to unrig the tax code.

Even just raising the tax rate for those at the top by just one percent, we would generate over $100 billion, a move that would help fund critical investments for working people.

By returning to the progressive tax system our nation had decades ago, we can even the playing field, and raise hundreds of billions in the process. But we have to get Congress to act.

Tell Congress: Add new tax brackets, so people who make more than $1 million, $5 million all the way up to more than $100 million a year, pay progressively higher tax rates than everyone else.

Together, we will make sure the wealthy pay their fair share, help fund services for working people, and make our democracy work for the 99 percent.
