*October 28, 2022 Proclaimed First Responders Day in Skagit County*

Today, Skagit County Commissioners signed a proclamation officially designating October 28, 2022, as First Responders Day in Skagit County, in conjunction with National First Responders Day. The proclamation seeks to honor our local firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMTs, dispatch, and all those who are first on the scene in times of crisis.

Representatives from local law enforcement, fire, EMS, 911 dispatch, and Skagit County?s First Responder Foundation delivered a presentation during today?s proclamation hearing. Together, the County?s first responder community members highlighted the incredible service our dedicated first responders provide.

Commissioner Lisa Janicki spoke of the collaborative work being done across jurisdictions in our county, saying ?It?s what makes Skagit County, as a whole, work well. My heart and appreciation go to all of you in this room.?

Without question, their heroism has been on full display, especially during the past several years. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, our local responders have provided essential care to our most vulnerable populations, and they have done so with passion, dignity, and pride of service. Much of our community?s resilience during these times can be attributed to their dedication.

?You have to stay so strong for the people involved [and] for the families affected,? said Commissioner Peter Browning. ?We appreciate you so much and recognize the baggage that you carry with you.?

Every year, more than 200,000 calls are placed to Skagit 911, many of which require immediate response from local response agencies. During First Responders Day, we share our appreciation for the selfless professionals who provide these services every day, putting the needs of their communities above their own.

?The community owes you a debt of gratitude. Hopefully we?ll make this an annual event,? said Commissioner Ron Wesen.

In recognition of those who serve on the front lines, the people of Skagit County are encouraged to honor them by participating in ceremonies and activities that promote awareness of their many contributions to our community?s health, safety, and well-being.
