John,
Ginni and Clarence Thomas need to be investigated.
We’ve sent a complaint to the House and Senate Judiciary Committees calling on them to investigate both Ginni Thomas’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election and her husband Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s failure to recuse from relevant cases.
Ginni Thomas’s extensive efforts to overturn the 2020 election, which include texting conspiracy theories to White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, attending the Stop the Steal rally and contacting state legislators in multiple states, urging them to support “alternate” electors, make her unfit to serve as a federal official. That’s right—former President Trump appointed her to the Library of Congress Trust Fund Board in 2020, and she remains in that role.
Her deep involvement in these efforts also means that Justice Thomas should have recused from Supreme Court cases dealing with January 6th and the 2020 election—but as far as we are aware, he did not. Simply the appearance of impropriety is enough of a reason for a justice to recuse, and in this case, there’s more than just an appearance of impropriety.
The January 6th Select Committee has interviewed Ginni Thomas as part of their investigation. That’s an important step.
But we need a fuller investigation that includes Justice Thomas’s actions. Congress needs to act, for the sake of accountability for the insurrection, and for the integrity of the Supreme Court.
Thank you,
Noah Bookbinder
