Hi John,
As I was drinking my tea this morning, I was reflecting on this race, and it reminded me of something I said shortly after I became Chief Justice. So I wanted to share it with you and how I’m feeling about the final two weeks of this race.
From the start, I knew there would be people who would doubt me and this campaign. It’s a reality we’ve all faced at some point in our lives.
Some might whisper about if North Carolinians are ready to elect their first African American Senator. A year ago, pundits certainly tried to doubt that we could win this Senate seat at all.
But sitting here today, those naysayers who doubted us have been forced to acknowledge that North Carolina is in play. We’ve seen multiple tied polls. They’re calling our race “deadlocked,” and CNN says it is one of the seats most likely to flip on Election Day. That is a testament to what we have collectively accomplished. We’ve tried something different with a truly people-powered campaign, and now it is coming down to the wire.
Overcoming these kinds of questions and doubts reminded me of when I said this shortly after becoming Chief Justice: “There are times when people tell you that you can’t do something, and really it has to do more with the confinement of their own ability to see it.”
I am really excited to run as hard as we can in these final days. We’ve got Republicans panicked. We are giving them the fight of their life, and a historic victory is absolutely within reach. But it’s our job to make sure we don’t slow down or falter for even a moment, so I need to ask you today:
Thank you so much for having our back and believing in what we’re doing here in North Carolina. Now, let’s finish strong — together!
