Our state now has the highest gas prices in the nation. We’re paying an average of $5.75 at the gas pump statewide, which is a full $2.55 above the national average!

Despite the stability of global crude prices, the price at the pump in California has spiked as multiple in-state oil refineries have gone offline for maintenance without any explanation.

We know gas prices are always volatile. For decades, natural disasters, explosions, wars, and price-rigging by oil cartels have kept us on a fossil fuel rollercoaster ride. Thankfully, we are finally taking meaningful steps to replace fossil fuels with energy sources that are safer, cleaner, and far more reliable. In the years ahead, millions of Americans will be liberated from the tyranny of the pump.

But right now, it’s important to call out what Big Oil is doing to us in California by gaming their refinery maintenance schedule and sticking us with an unprecedented price divergence from national averages. Californians are already struggling to make ends meet with the rising cost of food and housing, and now this price-gouging from oil companies right before the mid-term elections.

It doesn’t pass the smell test, and we won’t stand for it.

My colleagues and I are calling on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate market manipulation, non-competitive practices and anti-consumer behavior in California’s transportation fuel markets. Will you join me by adding your name to this call to action?

Congress has taken multiple steps over the last two decades to address price gouging and anti-consumer behavior and strengthen oversight across the fuel and energy sectors. We have provided federal agencies with the authority to investigate non-competitive practices to ensure transparency and fairness for consumers. These steps have led to some tangible market improvements, but clearly there’s more work to do.

Left unchecked, Big Oil’s limitless greed will undermine our ability to help working families make ends meet.

It is imperative that the FTC use their authority to investigate manipulation within transportation fuel markets and protect California consumers. Add your name to our call to action today: [link removed]
