Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is urgently responding to an alarming outbreak of cholera in Haiti, a country already facing an appalling health and humanitarian emergency which continues to deteriorate. Now confronted with an explosion of violence and a fuel shortage, people are struggling to access clean water and health care.
This past week, MSF’s cholera treatment centers have received about 100 patients per day in Port-au-Prince, and we urgently need your help to continue our response to save lives in Haiti and around the world.
The fuel shortage in Port-au-Prince has forced many hospitals that rely on generators to reduce their services, and some may even have to shut down entirely.
Access to hospitals and health facilities is a constant challenge in the Haitian capital; it is often very difficult to reach a health care facility that can provide the needed treatment.
“The situation is so volatile that it can change from one day to the next, even from one hour to the next,” said MSF doctor Dr. Luxamilda Jean-Louis. Despite this uncertainty and volatility, MSF teams are providing lifesaving treatment and expanding access to clean water for the hardest-hit communities in Port-au-Prince–and we’re turning to our supporter community to continue to fuel our efforts.
