Dear Resident,

The saying made famous by Harold Wilson that ‘a week is a long time in politics’ has been stress tested to the extreme over the last few weeks. But contrary to popular belief, Members of Parliament are carrying out their usual work that has a direct and positive outcome for their constituents.

Since my last ENews to you, I have been out and about across Erewash, engaging with businesses, voluntary organisations, and residents directly.

It was great to be able to help celebrate the opening of the new Club House at the Long Eaton Rugby Club. This was so typical of our community - everyone coming together to help raise the money needed for the club’s extended facilities, then everyone pulling together to get it built. Hats off to Chris Brookes and his team for making it happen.

The 770th Ilkeston Charter Fair has now left town, but everyone must be commended for supporting it despite the torrential rain. Thanks must also go to the residents and businesses that have to put up with the disruption. Whilst I didn’t manage to experience as many rides as usual due to the weather, I’m still immensely proud to host the oldest Charter Fair in the country.

Last Friday I met with Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People to learn more about their work. Based in Loughborough, the services cover most of the East Midlands. I was able to learn about Rainbows’ plans for the future and how they are wanting to extend the outreach service they provide. I am looking forward to visiting the hospice over the coming weeks to see the amazing work firsthand.

In Parliament I’ve had meetings with a number of organisations that have relevance to Erewash.

Having several logistics companies operating in Erewash, and as it was National Lorry Week last week, made it important for me to meet with the Road Haulage Association. I’ve had numerous conversations with local businesses about the issues affecting this industry locally, and nationally the issues are the same. There is still a shortage of HGV drivers - we now seem to have an insatiable appetite for home deliveries and internet purchases which is exacerbating the situation. Drivers’ rest facilities are also an issue. I heard that many of the rest facilities are quite dire which won’t encourage new drivers and probably is a contributing factor to the driver shortage.

Next Spring Bank Holiday weekend, the Erewash Canal Preservation and Development Association (ECP&DA) is holding a boat rally at the Langley Mill basin. (The last one they held here was excellent). However, I’d been made aware there is excessive growth of reeds in the canal which could make it difficult for the boats heading to the rally to navigate the canal. Therefore, I took the opportunity to raise this at a meeting with the Canal and River Trust. I am now confident that the Regional Director will work with ECP&DA to solve the problem.

Members of the Association of Convenience Stores held their annual conference in London last week and then some came into Parliament. It was lovely to welcome Vip Measuria, who owns the One Stop Shop and Post Office in Draycott, to Parliament and to be able to thank him personally for the community spirit he and his staff showed throughout the pandemic.
