When Liz Truss became Prime Minister, Full Fact wrote to her about the importance of public trust.

We asked her to demonstrate political integrity and honesty, and to take action to improve the quality of public debate.

This did not happen. Over the course of her premiership, Full Fact had to challenge false and misleading claims made by the PM ([link removed]) and her ministers.

She did not correct the record ([link removed]) when we requested it of her. Nor did her former Chancellor ([link removed]) , Kwasi Kwarteng.

Friend, I also wrote to you when Liz Truss became the new leader of her party. I asked for your help, because a Prime Minister’s words matter.

Over 200 of you donated to support our work. It’s thanks to our supporters that we were able to hold the PM accountable when her words fell short—including when she repeatedly misrepresented the government’s own energy price guarantee. Our fact check ([link removed]) was widely shared and reported by journalists, and on that occasion Liz Truss went on to admit her mistake.

Rishi Sunak will be the sixth occupant of No 10 since Full Fact began its work. He will shortly become Prime Minister after a second leadership contest during which he has not explained publicly how he plans to address the challenges now facing him.

In August he told the BBC that “I want to restore trust back into politics. I want to put integrity and honesty at the heart of how I run government and how I want to be prime minister”.
