As the former Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, I know what’s at stake.

Christiana Figueres here, former Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), on behalf of my friends at 350.org.

This has been an incredible year for the climate movement. Yes, we have had setbacks. But also, from the youth-lead Global Climate Strikes to the decarbonization of thousands of economies around the world, from towns, cities, and major corporations, this is a year for optimism.

None of this happened by chance, John. It’s thanks to the persistent work of many groups like 350.org, a group which, for the last decade, has been at the center of this work as an integral, uncompromising, international campaign dedicated to fighting the climate crisis.

I’m reaching out to you with a special request. We need as many people as possible to pitch in to support 350.org and make sure 2020 is the absolute watershed year for climate justice. Will you help?

What we must understand, John, is that the decisions we make in 2020 will decide the quality of life for every living thing on this planet for at least the next century.

That is not an exaggeration, that is our reality.

But, I’m choosing to look at this quite simply. We either get this right, right now, or we suffer the consequences. There is just no other way to move forward but to cut our emissions to zero to achieve stability, clean growth for nations that still need that growth, and climate justice.

John, 350.org works in local and global contexts around the world to achieve this. We need them stronger than ever to fight this battle. Will you make a contribution today?

Thanks to the Paris Agreement, we were able to decrease the projected global temperature rise by 5 degrees. This still isn’t enough, but it’s important to remember that when we come together, we can make these changes. We’ve done it before.

Now we have better science, and we know we must stay below 1.5 degrees. But we also know that decisions we make this year have a decisive influence on the viability of that temperature ceiling.

This is a monumental challenge of intergenerational responsibility. But we humans have caused this -- and we will solve this.

We are at a crossroads in human history, and thanks to organisations such as 350.org that provide critical infrastructure for the global climate change movement, we have a chance to come through this better, stronger, and more resilient than ever.

I invite you to make a contribution to 350.org today. Anything you can give will be turned into vital movement-building power around the world.

In strength,
Christiana Figueres
