Dear friend, Last week, we alerted you to the horrific, deadly attacks in Ukraine that killed and injured scores of civilians, and damaged critical infrastructure including power, heating, water and gas utilities. The bombardments came amid a pattern of escalation across the country. Once again our community showed up: hundreds of people in our global community responded with donations and words of encouragement. As the war in Ukraine persists, the United Nations has recorded more than 7.5 million Ukrainian refugees across Europe, and people are continuing to flee the conflict. Mercy Corps continues to offer innovative solutions and assistance, thanks to our global community that has helped us provide $2.2 million+ to local organizations delivering life-saving support to people affected by the war. Here’s a brief update on the progress of our humanitarian response. Progress update Since June 2022, Mercy Corps has significantly scaled up operations in Ukraine. We are meeting immediate humanitarian needs by providing emergency cash assistance to people displaced by the war in Ukraine, delivering essential supplies in coordination with local organizations, and connecting families on the move with trusted information on how to access basic services, safe routes out of occupied regions, and their legal rights in and outside of Ukraine. We have hired dozens of new staff members to support local programming needs, and opened two office locations in Ukraine. We are also working with 65 local partners to provide lifesaving support across Ukraine, Poland, and Romania. We are continuing to expand that network (now up from 53 organizations) and are scaling capacity-building support to further our partners’ reach. Mercy Corps and our partners have been working to ensure people fleeing from the conflict have their basic needs met. As of August 2022, we have delivered food items to over 22,000 people, and non-food items — including clothing, medicine, sanitation and hygiene products —to more than 26,000 people in Ukraine. We have also supported local partners in Poland and Romania in providing basic goods and services to those fleeing from the war. Impact Story: Delivering essential supplies
Słuszna Strawa is a catering company in Poland that pivoted to feeding Ukrainian refugees after the war began.
The catering company is staffed by refugees and migrants from around the world. Since March 2022, they have created dozens of new jobs for refugees from Ukraine and other countries. With funding from Mercy Corps, they have opened a new restaurant to bring together locals and refugees alike to share a meal and build community.
With the winter months ahead, there is growing concern about millions of Ukrainians who are living in damaged homes or buildings that will not provide protection against harsh winter conditions. This may also be an issue for refugees who are in temporary shelter situations. The result may be another large-scale movement of people both within Ukraine and across the borders. Mercy Corps is conducting a preliminary assessment to support winterization efforts.
