You journalists are busy, and sometimes it can be a “big ask” to get enough of your time and attention to drill down on complex and important issues. So this is a special edition of The Morning Meeting that we hope will help journalists focus on critical issues that will face the next Congress.
The closing weeks of a campaign season can get noisy and convoluted by trivial attacks and counterattacks. Embrace complexity and don’t settle for soundbites. You can go directly to the column by clicking here
I will try to persuade journalists to dedicate some space/time to ask candidates running for the U.S. House and Senate to address foreign policy issues that have a direct effect on every American. For example, shouldn’t we ask candidates:
- If China takes military action to control Taiwan, what American response would you support? What would you unconditionally oppose?
- Under what conditions would you support direct American military action to support Ukraine against Russia?
- What are three Congressional actions that you would support to control the flow of immigrants seeking to enter the southern U.S. border?
- Whether they would note to maintain the Paris Accord agreements or shift back toward fossil fuel production and dependance.
