The EPA recently proposed designating two chemicals as hazardous substances, which would unlock their authority to order cleanups and force polluters to pay for damage to our health and environment.

This group of chemicals, known as perfluoroalkyls or PFAS for short, has been linked to cancer, harms fetal development, reduces the effectiveness of vaccines, and is associated with many other serious health problems.

The EPA's own scientists have determined that these chemicals are even more dangerous than previously thought and present distinct risks to pregnant women and children. For decades, these chemicals have been used, largely unregulated, in thousands of applications and products.

These substances are now present in the drinking water of hundreds, if not thousands, of community drinking water supplies, often due to avoidable past releases into the environment at contaminated sites.

More than 95% of the U.S. population already has PFAS in their bodies. PFAS exposure is especially prevalent among low-income communities and communities of color, which are already more likely to be exposed to hazardous industrial pollution or waste sites due to structural racism and power imbalances.
