2022 Daily Docket — Friday, Oct. 21

Here are some updates from today.

• In a win for voters, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court issued a decision allowing counties to continue to implement cure procedures, rejecting a GOP lawsuit trying to prohibit the process. Cure procedures allow voters to fix technical errors on their mail-in ballots so their votes will count.

• The Arizona secretary of state’s office referred two more reports of voter intimidation to the Arizona attorney general and U.S. Department of Justice, bringing the total to three reports of intimidation — all in Maricopa County involving vigilante "monitors" at drop boxes.

• A New York judge declined to block a law that permits people to vote absentee if they are concerned about contracting an illness such as COVID-19, but struck down certain parts of a law that governs the counting of absentee ballots and prevents legal challenges to already counted ballots. 

• The Pennsylvania Supreme Court agreed to hear a lawsuit brought by national and state Republican parties seeking to prohibit the counting of undated and wrongly dated mail-in ballots. Briefing will occur next week.

• A Pennsylvania judge denied a conservative group's request to pause a lower court's decision that allows Lehigh County to use drop boxes without new restrictions as the group appeals the ruling. Lehigh County can use drop boxes as the appeal is litigated.

• Yesterday, three officials from Harris County, Texas (home to Houston) sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice requesting federal monitors for the upcoming elections.

• This past week, two polls were released revealing the impact of former President Donald Trump's attacks on mail-in ballots in the 2020 election. 55% of Republicans now view mail-in voting as a major threat to democracy.
