Dear MoveOn member,
The latest poll by Donald Trump's own pollster put Mitch McConnell in a virtual tie with his top Democratic opponent, who has raised record-setting amounts of money for her campaign.1
Now, McConnell is facing a MASSIVE backlash after he admitted that he's "not an impartial juror" and plans "total coordination" with Trump's team in managing the Senate impeachment trial.2,3
And cracks are finally appearing in the Republican wall of opposition to convicting and removing Trump in the Senate. Last week, Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska said that she was "disturbed" by McConnell's pledge of "total coordination" with Trump's team on impeachment.4
McConnell's Senate seat and the GOP's control of the Senate have never been more vulnerable than they are right now, but we still face one big problem: McConnell's home state of Kentucky—plus other critical Senate states, Colorado and Maine—are not key battleground states in the 2020 presidential election.
And we can't afford to take away any of the resources from our campaign to beat Trump. That means we need to raise enough money to fund an entire additional Senate election operation on top of everything we're doing to beat Trump.
We MUST defeat Mitch McConnell and other GOP senators in 2020. And we MUST NOT make cuts to our critical work to defeat Donald Trump. Will you start a $5 a month donation to help us defeat McConnell and flip control of the Senate in 2020—without pulling any crucial resources out of our fight to defeat Donald Trump?
No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.
McConnell's handling of the Trump impeachment trial has become a massive political problem for him.
Just a few weeks ago, it was hard to imagine even one Republican senator turning on McConnell. Now, it's the opposite. Murkowski is already calling him out for blatantly failing to uphold his oath of office, and if he keeps turning the Senate trial into a sham, it's not hard to imagine more Republicans coming out against him, especially those facing tough re-election races next year.5
When even Senate Republicans are starting to bail on McConnell, you KNOW he's in trouble.
McConnell also has big problems back home. Matt Bevin, the the McConnell-backed governor of Kentucky, was recently defeated for re-election.6 And Amy McGrath, a McConnell opponent, is flat-out out-fundraising McConnell.7
McConnell's local press is awful, too. A top columnist at the Lexington, KY, newspaper called McConnell "Kentucky's shame."8 And a Kentucky-born law professor just wrote a scathing op-ed in the biggest newspaper in Kentucky, accusing him of breaking two sworn oaths—his oath of office to defend the Constitution and the oath he will take as a juror in Trump's trial.9
John, it has never been more clear that we can beat Mitch McConnell and flip control of the Senate, and we can't let this opportunity go by. But we also can't afford to take any resources out of the key battleground states we're working in to beat Donald Trump.
That means we need to raise enough money to fund an entire additional Senate election effort—including advertising, staff, and all of the other campaign infrastructure needed to ditch Mitch and end GOP control of the Senate in 2020.
Will you become a monthly donor today and help us defeat Mitch McConnell and flip control of the Senate in 2020—without scaling back our plans to defeat Donald Trump? $5 a month, or whatever you can afford, will go a long way.
No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.
Thanks for all you do.
