It is an honor to represent our district in Congress. My team and I are always here to help. Please feel free to contact my office at any time with any questions or concerns you may have. THE HAPPENINGS IN CONGRESS Blackwell Legislation Signed Into Law This week, I participated in a ceremony at the Blackwell School in Marfa, Texas, with the National Parks Conservation Association, members of the Blackwell School Alliance, Blackwell School Alumni, and local officials to celebrate my bill, the Blackwell School National Historic Site Act, being signed into law. This legislation designates the Blackwell School as a national historic site so that the stories and memories of Blackwell students are never forgotten. It was an honor to commemorate this important accomplishment that carries incredible cultural, economic, and historical impact for the Marfa community and beyond. $1.2 Million Secured For School Safety Enhancements In TX-23 As a father of 6, one of my top priorities is ensuring that schools are safe havens for our children. We must supply staff, law enforcement, and students with the resources necessary to stop school violence before it happens. I am proud to have helped secure $1.2 million in school safety funding for our district. These critical dollars will go towards school violence prevention efforts, training for school personnel and students, evidence-based threat assessments, and research and evaluation funding on the causes and consequences of school violence. SPENDING TIME IN TX-23 Visited San Antonio Schools with Rey Saldaña As a father of 6, I understand that a student’s success goes beyond the classroom. This week I visited with school leadership at my alma mater, Thomas Edison High School, to discuss federal funding to improve wrap-around services like tutoring, after-school programs, college prep, nutrition, and mental health support. Joining me was Rey Saldaña, President of Communities in Schools (CIS)- an organization that provides resources to help children stay in school. Together, we also visited with South San Antonio ISD leadership. In Congress, I helped introduce the Communities Serving Schools Act which authorizes critical grant funding for important school programs like CIS. I will continue fighting to ensure our students have the tools they need to stay in school and succeed. Stopped By Fort Stockton ISD I was pleased to meet with the Assistant Superintendent of Fort Stockton ISD to tour their newly renovated high school campus. The school recently suffered severe flood damage, which we assessed and discussed funding options for. In Congress, I will always fight to keep schools safe and well-funded, so our future generations are given the best educational experience possible. Visited Marathon ISD It was great to visit with Marathon ISD Superintendent Ivonne Durant, the Student Council, and Brewster County Sheriff Dodson to discuss how I can help secure funding for school safety. It is essential for our schools in rural areas, such as those in Marathon ISD, to be equipped with the proper tools, staff and resources to provide our children with a safe and high-quality education. Discussed Educational Resources at IDEA PCS Burke Academy I will always fight to make sure every student has the resources they need to realize their potential and receive a quality and personalized education. This week I met with teachers, staff, and students at IDEA Public Charter School Burke Academy in San Antonio to discuss how they provide each student that comes through their doors with the best education possible. Met With Family Violence Prevention Services During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we are called to recognize abusive situations and help those who are struggling behind closed doors. This week I met with Family Violence Prevention Services to discuss their honorable work providing shelter and support to battered women and children. As someone who spent time in battered women’s shelters growing up, I am incredibly grateful for the work they do to break the traumatic cycle of domestic violence. Visited with Sonora Chamber of Commerce It was great to meet with the Sonora Chamber of Commerce this week to discuss their business-friendly agenda. From improving our energy and border security to advocating for public works, I look forward to continuing my support of the Chamber’s mission through my efforts in Congress. I am thankful for all the work they do to protect local businesses and entrepreneurs in Sonora. Upcoming Mobile Office Hours Navigating federal casework can be difficult.
