Dear friends,

Please join the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights on Thursday, October 27th at 12:00 PM EST/ 11:00 AM CST/ 9:00 AM PST for a live Zoom webinar as we present policy recommendations from the Spotlight Report on the Borderlands. Our report is directed to U.S. policymakers and national allies, urging them to move away from militarized migration management approaches and support rights-centered pathways for regular and safe migration.

We have invited organizations from across the country to take part in this virtual conversation, presenting Spotlight report findings and policy recommendations to participating members of Congress. NNIRR Executive Director Alma Maquitico will moderate the conversation, sharing the purpose and goals of the report and related digital community map that will provide a visual narrative of the effects of militarization and deterrence on border communities.

We will feature presentations from the following panelists:

Tsion Gurmu, Combating Transnational Efforts to Detain and Deport Black Migrants Traveling to the U.S.-Mexico Border

Giovanni Batz, Violation of Indigenous Peoples’ Rights at the U.S.-Mexico Border

Pedro Rios, Chronicling the Border Patrol Culture of Abuse and Impunity; Smart Technology in Border Communities and its Implication on Human Rights

Christine Kovic & Eddie Canales, Death by Policy: Migrant Deaths and Disappearances along the U.S.-Mexico Border
