Kudos on the Kudus
The future of the lesser kudu species is a little brighter—and cuter—with the arrival of two calves at the Zoo. A male was born September 14; and as of September 29, he has a female playmate. The leggy little ones are living with their herd and a herd of Speke's gazelles in their Mesa habitat, across from the polar bears. The kudu herd is part of SDZWA's Species Survival Plan (SSP) conservation efforts. Lesser kudus are found in our Savanna Conservation Hub.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park
New Hope for the Future
Galloping across a grassy hillside, a pair of young Przewalski's horses, named Kurt and Holly, nuzzle and graze. This seemingly ordinary moment was only made possible by decades of pioneering conservation work. Once extinct in native habitat, these horses have made a mighty comeback—but challenges for the species threaten that progress. Today, a groundbreaking program is paving the way for their future, with a little help from the DNA of a horse that lived more than 40 years ago and the foresight of one person who took a chance on wild innovation.
