John, I'm part of a coalition of Northwest Side elected officials who called out Gubernatorial Candidate Darren Bailey on his disgusting remarks blaming immigrants for crime and violence.
We cannot stand aside as immigrant families are used as scapegoats for politicians to try to advance their careers. As part of an immigrant family, we are not resume boosters, we are not criminals, and we will not let this harmful mindset continue.
My parents chose to leave their whole lives behind to come to the US. My mother was pregnant with me, and they still risked their lives to give our family a better chance to succeed.
And I've been successful. I've had the opportunity to help my community in countless ways, whether it's expanding Medicaid coverage for senior citizens regardless of legal status, advocating for affordable housing, or being a role model to our young women and girls.
I want everyone in our state to have the same opportunity for success that I did.
As a community, Illinois has made a lot of progress. But angry far-right politicians like Darren Bailey will always try to stop that progress.

As the founder and former director of the Center for Changing Lives, chair of the executive board for the Latin United Community Housing Association (LUCHA) and the Logan Square Neighborhood Association (LSNA), Delia has worked for solutions to many complex problems such as affordable housing, education, and criminal justice.
In 2018, Delia ran for and was elected to the House of Representatives in Illinois' 4th District. Since then, she has passed legislation expanding affordable housing, Medicaid coverage for seniors regardless of immigration status, and creating a Chicago school board. Now, she is part of the Democratic majority leadership team in the House.
