Come to Our Workshop to Join the Fight Against Lead
New York has more children with elevated blood lead levels than any other
state in the nation. And children of color account for more than 80 percent
of new cases in children under 6 years old. Children exposed to lead can
suffer permanent neurological damage.
As part of both the statewide Lead Free Kids New York coalition and the New York City Coalition to End Lead Poisoning, WE ACT is participating in a number of press events next week. And we are hosting a Lead-Poisoning Prevention Workshop at our Harlem office (1854 Amsterdam Avenue, at 152nd Street) on Tuesday, Oct. 25 from 6-8 PM. Come learn how you can protect children from lead poisoning and sign-up for free lead testing kits.
Join WE ACT, Youth Council members from Columbia's Centre for Children's Environmental Health and 8th graders from MS 331 in the Bronx for a DIY Beauty Night! Participants will create their own beauty products, and learn about the ingredients in the products they use on a daily basis.
Bring your friends, family, and some of your favorite beauty products from home. Make sure to arrive early - the first 50 people to arrive will be entered into a raffle for some fantastic beauty-related prizes! Join us Friday, October 28th, 3:30-6 pm online or in-person at Hess Commons, 722 W 168th St, New York City.
The midterm election is coming and early voting is starting soon! You can vote early in New York from October 29th until November 6th. Vote early at an early voting center or request a ballot by mail. The deadline to request a ballot by mail is October 24th. You can also vote on election day on November 8th at your local polling place.
When you go to vote this election, be sure to flip your ballot over and vote "YES" for the Clean Water, Clean Air, Green Jobs Bond Act on the back of your ballot! The bond will raise $4.2 billion to create cleaner air and water, reduce extreme heat, and upgrade infrastructure, creating nearly 100,000 local jobs with family-sustaining wages. The bond act will also direct at least 35% of funds to environmental justice communities like ours.
Join WE ACT and the Energy Democracy Alliance on November 10th, 6 - 7 pm to learn about statewide campaigns that are building a future where energy is affordable, clean and community owned. Meet Energy Democracy Alliance coalition members from across the state and gain a better understanding of how we plan to revolutionize our energy grid, bring down utility bills and transition to renewable energy.
TAKE ACTION: Bring the Zero Waste Bill Package to a vote!
The New York City Council’s Zero Waste Bill Package is a critical bill package for environmental justice in our city that WE ACT has been advocating for! This bill package will expand access to composting and recycling options for all households in Northern Manhattan, and will set the city on course to achieve zero waste by 2030. Contact Speaker Adams to demand that she brings this bill package to a vote.
Peggy Shepard was featured in NYU's Washington Square News as one of the experts discussing the intersection of transportation and climate policies along with U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg at an event hosted by the Century Foundation and NYU's Wagner School of Business.
