Dear John,
Bureaucrats can’t figure out how much you’re paying for the prime minister’s groceries.
Documents obtained by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation reveal that prime ministers’ household food expenses cost taxpayers nearly $55,000 every year. Expenses include trips to dollar stores, organic groceries, boxed water and frequent visits to fancy cheese shops in Ottawa. But Ottawa can’t or won’t explain how the bills get so high.
The National Post showcased the CTF’s work on its front-page story.

The prime minister already gets paid about $380,000 per year. Prime Ministers get mortgage-free mansions. And they get a chef. All paid for by taxpayers like you.
It gets worse.
The government won’t reveal why it’s spending so much money. Are some of these costs for official government functions? Is the entire tab for personal groceries? You deserve answers.
In the United States, the president and first family are charged personally for all groceries and household items while living in the White House.
Here’s what the government needs to do.
The government must make it mandatory for prime ministers to post their household expenses online and clearly show that all family grocery bills are paid personally.
The Privy Council Office oversees these expenses. You can tell PCO bureaucrats what you think of these huge grocery bills by sending an email to this address: [email protected]
Thanks for fighting for taxpayers – it’s making a difference!
Sincerely,
- Franco, Shannon, Todd and the rest of the CTF team.
