John,

Michelle Steel is running shameful attack ads about me and everything I stand for. So I wanted you to hear it straight from me – who I am and why I’m running for Congress.

Before I jump in, I’m currently running ads to help counter these attacks, but we’re at risk of being drowned out and outspent by my opponent. If you can, send in a contribution of $3 toward our next buy.

My parents, my brother, and me.

Here it goes:

My grandmother escaped communist China, and my parents are immigrants from Taiwan who came to the U.S. because they loved this country and believed in the American Dream.

My dad tried climbing the corporate ladder, but as an Asian immigrant in the late 70s, it became clear he would never get the promotion he wanted. So, he started his own business instead.

Working with my parents was a tough lesson in what putting food on the table meant. It was also a reminder that despite how hard we worked, we could still be treated like foreigners by some. It's unfortunate, and it's been disheartening to see anti-Asian sentiment only worsen in recent years, with Steel perpetuating the problem in Orange County.

A key part of the solution is making sure our government reflects the diversity of our communities, not just at face value, but because the principles we were raised with represent the very best that the U.S. has to offer -- service, hard work, and love of country.

We cannot look the other way when extremists try to stoke ethnic suspicion, fear based on trauma, and hate the way my opponent has. These are painful distractions from real issues that need to be urgently addressed: reproductive rights, childcare, healthcare, housing, and education. That’s a big reason why I’m in this fight.

Our Orange County community has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to get the representation we deserve, but only if we can compete with the flood of special interest cash backing my opponent. That’s why I’m asking you to rush $3 before midnight to help us flip this seat and restore some integrity in Congress.

Some issues should transcend politics -- racism is one of them.

Thanks for hearing me out,
