A Message from Executive Director Christi Green

Welcome to fall! With the crispness in the air, we can sense the changes coming. MCF is excited to start a new season and focus on "strengthening." For us it is an active word that reflects stability, wellness, renewal and excitement that we can pass on to Maryland families. But in order to serve others, it is important to focus on our own wellness. MCF is gearing up for a big end of year (we have some great announcements and campaigns coming in November, stay tuned)!

As a leader, and after we all had a tough couple of years, I want to personally take this opportunity of the season change to to "walk the walk" as an example of preventing burnout and to establish a better work-life balance. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines burnout as a syndrome conceptualized as the result of chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.

I invite you to take steps to avoid burnout and join me as I start these top ten daily goals:

Start your day with a big glass of water and stay hydrated.

Walk 10,000 steps each day (you can use an app on your phone to keep track).

Eat healthy (I enjoy a homemade smoothie for breakfast).

Use your calendar or phone alarm to schedule enjoyable mini-breaks throughout the day like a walk around the block, meditation, stretching, or enjoy a cup of coffee or tea outside.

Set aside dedicated family time.

Breathe.

Give a compliment!

Schedule focus, learning and/or catch up on messages time.

Spend at least 30 minutes winding down each night and get a good night's sleep.

Give yourself a break! Can't get to everything? Start with one or two goals a day, or half the steps to start and add more daily.

Have any to add? I would love to hear from you. To learn more about the Burnout Epidemic, listen to this podcast recommended by one of our Family Peer Support Specialist Supervisors.

If You Have Private Health Insurance, You Need to Know About This New Law

A new law goes into effect on January 1, 2023 that allows those with state-regulated private health insurance to see an out-of -network provider for mental health or substance use treatment without being "balance billed" (having to pay extra costs for seeing an out-of-network provider).

Currently, if a person with private health insurance cannot see an appropriate in-network mental health or substance use provider within a reasonable time (three days for urgent needs, 10 days for non-urgent needs) or reasonable distance (for most behavioral health services, this means within 10 miles in urban area, 25 miles in suburban areas, and 60 miles in rural areas), their insurer must give the person permission to see an out-of-network provider. However, prior to this new law, the consumer could be "balance-billed," meaning that they had to pay the difference between what the insurer reimbursed the out-of-network provider and what the provider normally charges. This cost difference could be significant.
