** Gwynne responds to resignation of Liz Truss
------------------------------------------------------------

Responding to the news that Liz Truss has resigned, Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish said:

"After just 44 days in Office, Liz Truss has stepped down as Prime Minister. Her historically brief tenure will be defined by a catastrophic mini-budget which crashed the economy, sent mortgage rates soaring and inflicted more misery on working people already facing a cost-of-living crisis.

"Let’s be clear. None of this is acceptable. We have millions on NHS waiting lists, food bank use rising to historic levels, and the Tories swapping leaders around as if it’s all a game. Real people are suffering because of the Tory Party’s inability to govern. It is shameful.

"The Tories have gambled with lives and livelihoods and taken for granted the sacred trust of the British people. They do not have the right to inflict another unelected Prime Minister on the people of Denton and Reddish. It is time for them to step out of the way, and let the Labour Party get on with the business of Governing.

Enough is enough. We need a General Election. Now."

** Gwynne welcomes decision to keep Whitehill Fire Station open
------------------------------------------------------------

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has welcomed the news that Whitehill Fire Station will remain open.

The initial plan was for both fire stations to merge, with a new district fire station being built in a new location.

Following a consultation and an analysis of the impact the merger would have on service levels and response times, the Deputy Mayor of Greater Manchester Baroness Beverley Hughes has taken the decision to keep both stations open.

Gwynne has welcomed the announcement, calling it “very reassuring news” for people across Stockport. He has previously raised his objections to the closure of Whitehill Fire Station, and has met with representatives of the Fire Brigades Union to discuss the plans.

Both Whitehill and Stockport fire stations will now be improved and redeveloped as part of the GMCA’s wider estates improvement project.

Commenting, Andrew Gwynne said:

“I’m very pleased that this decision has been made. Whitehill fire station has served residents in Reddish South for many years, and this is very reassuring news for people across Stockport.

“Our fire and rescue services deserve to be given all the tools they need to do their vital jobs. Since 2016, £140m has been cut from fire services by this Tory Government. It’s not acceptable.

“I’m glad that here in Greater Manchester we’ll be protecting our fire stations and investing in improvements to equip them for the future.”

Deputy Mayor for Policing, Crime, Criminal Justice and Fire Baroness Beverley Hughes added:

“GMFRS is always looking at how it can improve the way it serves and protects the people of Greater Manchester, and it is right that we explore options to maximise this. However, fundamental to any change is ensuring that the response times of firefighters and the level of service provided is never compromised and this factor took precedence over any merger.

“Stockport and Whitehill stations will both remain operational, serving their communities. I can also confirm that we will now be able to improve and redevelop both existing stations as part of our wider estates improvements project to update, modernise and increase energy efficiency of all our fire and rescue service stations and buildings. This is good news for our firefighters and residents of Stockport and its surrounding areas.”

** Gwynne launches Local Business Awards 2022
------------------------------------------------------------

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has today opened nominations for his 2022 Local Business Awards.

The local awards are an annual competition organised by Gwynne which encourage constituents to celebrate their favourite local businesses from across Denton and Reddish. Winners are announced for each of the 7 wards that make up the constituency, as well as one overall winner.

Last year was a record-breaking year for the awards, with more than 4,500 nominations received and over 250 local businesses celebrated. The overall prize was eventually awarded to the weight loss support group Beeweighed. Tranquility Cosmetics in Denton came a close second.

Gwynne will announce the winners of the 2022 awards on Small Business Saturday ([link removed]) , which falls on the 3rd of December.

Commenting on the return of the awards, Andrew Gwynne said:

“The Local Business Awards are a brilliant way of celebrating the incredible array of businesses we have across Denton and Reddish.

Every year, I’m blown away by the standard of our businesses. If you live in Audenshaw, Denton, Dukinfield, Reddish and the Heatons please do get involved by nominating your favourite business on my website!

I have a feeling this year’s awards are going to be the biggest yet!”

All nominees need to be in the Denton and Reddish parliamentary constituency. If you are unsure if this is the case, please enter the business’s postcode here ([link removed]) .

📺 WATCH: We have a Backbench Business Debate on Motor Neurone Disease.

We heard incredibly moving testimonies from MPs whose families, loved ones and constituents had been affected by this dreadful disease.

I speak as Labour's Shadow Public Health Minister, and press the Minister to do more to support those with MND.

📺 WATCH: There’s a Backbench Business Debate on access to dentistry.
I speak in my capacity as Labour’s Shadow Minister for Public Health.

There are dentistry deserts right across England because of Tory mismanagement.

We urgently need to give dentistry the tools, technology and staff it needs so that those who require care can access it.

📺 WATCH: I raise the problem of youths dangerously razzing round my constituency on motorbikes putting themselves, other road users and pedestrians at risk.

I ask for an urgent statement from the new Home Secretary to hear what the Government is doing to give GMP all the power and resources it needs to tackle this problem.

📺 WATCH: The Labour Party has secured an Opposition Day debate to force a binding vote in Parliament on the Government’s u-turn on fracking.

Truss has made this a confidence motion in her Government and the Tories are now on a three line whip to support fracking, despite many Tory MPs saying they’re against it.

I point out that the Government’s policy on “public consultation” doesn’t hold water with how planning laws in England work.

📺 WATCH: We have an urgent question on the shocking attack of a peaceful protestor in the grounds of the Chinese Consulate in Manchester.

The Government needs to summon the Chinese Ambassador and make it clear that this kind of senseless violence will not be tolerated on the streets of Manchester.

📺 WATCH: In Westminster Hall we're discussing the issue of support for Kinship Carers.

I speak about my own experience of being a kinship carer to wonderful Lyle, and the difficulties Councillor Allison Gwynne ([link removed]) and I faced navigating this incredibly complicated system.

The Government must do more to support kinship carers. It shouldn't be a uphill battle just to care for a child that you love dearly.

📺 WATCH: The PM is in hiding. She created an economic mess. Millions are suffering. She’s now being kept away from Parliament… this can’t go on.

(...she resigned three days later).

📺 WATCH: The Chancellor has just undone most of Truss’s disastrous mini-budget. But the damage is done and he’s admitted cuts are on the way.

I impress that communities are still reeling from the massive Osborne cuts to local government and mustn’t be a target this time.

📺 WATCH: At Levelling-up Questions I come in on a question about the Government’s new Investment Zones.

Whilst supporting the GM bid, which includes Ashton Moss in my constituency, I ask precisely what tax advantages there’ll be to these zones and how we prevent them sucking in existing jobs from elsewhere rather than creating genuinely new jobs and growth.

📰 READ: Thank you to the BBC for covering my comments on the shocking attack of a peaceful protestor at the Chinese consulate in Manchester.

These scenes are totally unacceptable wherever they occur, but to see them take place on the streets of Manchester is truly shocking.

The British Government needs to be clear; we won't tolerate this, and any official who took part in this assault should be immediately expelled.
