Why Puglia is a perfect Italian beach destination |
When travelers visit Italy, they typically indulge themselves in the country’s abundance of food, illustrious landscapes, and rich cultural history. In the Puglia region, all three of these things meet with a range of beautiful beach destinations to choose from.
This Sunday at 9 p.m ET, Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy visits Puglia, a beach lover’s paradise. Tucci soaks in the region's rocky coves, delicious seafood, and over 500 miles of sandy coastline.
Take a look at some of the best beaches in Puglia:

Polignano a Mare
Overlooking the emerald Adriatic Sea, the white-washed town of Polignano a Mare is located near the southern tip of Italy. It offers winding streets for wandering, churches for browsing and sea views for basking.
The main beach, Lama Monachile, looks like a hemmed-in fjord but is the mouth of a now-extinct river, spanned at the inland end by a Roman bridge. Locals escape to their favorite terraces on the cliffs overlooking the sand when the small beach gets overcrowded.
In addition to its beaches, Polignano is also renowned for its seafood and marvelous ice creams. Its specialty, the cono tuffato (dipped wafer cornet), is plunged into whipped cream before being served.

Gallipoli
Its name stems from the Greek kalé polis — the "beautiful town" — and hints at why ferocious pirates and invaders have tried to conquer it across the centuries. Dubbed the "Pearl of the Ionian Sea," this vibrant harbor in the 1800s was the Mediterranean hub of lamp oil and spice merchants.
Today, the walled town with its golden sand and fluorescent blue waters is a big pull for beach fans.
Gallipoli's gourmet specialties are its purple, tasty giant shrimps and Gallipolina fish broth with pasta. And for those fond of sweets, the famous pasticciotto Buccunotto, a cream-filled bun shaped like a vessel, offers a delightful dose of sugar.

Torre dell Orso
Southeast of the city of Lecce is a crescent-shaped sand beach famous for its twin sea stacks, called the "Two Sisters," which rise near the shore.
Sunbathers enjoy swimming over the rocks; a spot adored by cliff divers, as well. The area is plentiful with thick pine woods that offer convenient picnic spaces and excellent shelter from the burning summer heat.
